New Zealand is becoming a more popular country for Singaporean students due to its vast natural environments and cleanliness. Although its land area is close to that of Japan, its population is only 4 million. The culture of New Zealand is a mix of Europe and Pacific Islands and sports is a passion for most New Zealanders. The beauty of the country was also showcased in the movie Lord of The Ring.

There are 8 state-funded universities in the New Zealand university system, which is similar to the British system:

2. Auckland University of Technology
3. University of Canterbury
4. Massey University
5. University of Otago

8. Lincoln University

Unlike other countries where universities are usually broad-based, New Zealand universities tend to specialize in certain fields:

University of Auckland – architecture, engineering, medicine, optometry and fine arts
Auckland University of Technology – communication studies, graphic design
University of Canterbury – forestry, engineering and fine arts
Massey University – agriculture, horticulture, food technology, aviation, business studies and veterinary science
University of Otago – medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and physiotherapy
University of Waikato – business studies, law and education
Victoria University of Wellington – architecture, public administration and social works
Lincoln University – agriculture, horticulture and commerce

Most New Zealand universities and polytechnics operate on a semester system.
The semesters are: March – June, July – November.
Programs usually start in February and July.

In addition to the above universities, there are also 20 polytechnics and institutes of technology providing a comprehensive range of industry and occupation-based vocational studies. Qualifications earned at these institutions can be transferred as credits to New Zealand universities.

Some polytechnics and institutes of higher learning like Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, Northland Polytechnic, Manukau Institute of Technology offer degree programs as well.

Estimated Annual Tuition Fees for Undergraduate Courses

Living expenses in New Zealand is estimated at NZ $ 20,000 per year, covering accommodation, food, transport, recreation and healthcare.

The good news for all students is that registered international students can apply to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during term time and for up to 40 hours a week during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
