There are 5 polytechnics in Singapore. The oldest polytechnic is the Singapore Polytechnic and its most famous alumnus is Mr Sim Wong Hoo of Creative Technologies. The newest polytechnic is Republic Polytechnic.
According to MOE, polytechnics were set up with the mission to train middle-level professionals to support the technological and economic development of Singapore. Reflecting the wide range of abilities, aptitudes and interests of their students, the polytechnics seek to train students with relevant and specific skills for the workplace so that they will enjoy a competitive edge in a knowledge-based economy.
