As further evidence of a changing trend, more President Scholars are opting to study humanities instead of the sciences. In the past, almost all scholars opted for science and engineering disciplines.
The Singapore Government named 5 President Scholars in August 2008. They are all 19 years old and there are 3 female scholars and 2 male scholars. Only one scholar chose to study medicine at Cambridge University. She is Miss Lim Shin Bin , a student councillor from Raffles Junior College.
The other President Scholars will take up humanities.
Miss Amanda Chong will do law at Cambridge University. She is from Hwa Chong Institution and 2008 winner of the Angus Ross prize, an award given to the top A-level literature student outside UK.
Miss Louisa Jean Lim, the former head prefect of Methodist Girls' School and Hwa Chong Institution's netball captain, will read Economics, Politics and International Studies at Warwick University.
Mr Daniel Ong from Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College will read Economics at Stanford University. He headed RJC's Interact Club.
Mr David Chan from Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College will read Ethics, Politics and Economics at Yale University. He was Vice -President of RJC Students' Council. |
