Over 120 foreign universities offer degrees in Singapore Print

More and more foreign universities are entering Singapore's education market. There are now more than 120 foreign universities offering bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes in Singapore, a record high for Singapore. These landmark findings are based on a 3-month independent study done by Edupoll. It is the first time such an extensive project is carried out in Singapore and it involved laborious research and validation by Edupoll's in-house team of researchers. Just as Singapore is recognised as an aviation hub and a maritime hub, we have also grown in stature as a higher education hub. The Singapore Education brand is growing stronger.

" If you look at it in terms of pure numbers, Singapore has the highest universities per capita in the world , given our small population base. There are more universities running programmes in Singapore than in countries like Australia, Canada and New Zealand. And we have as many universities represented in Singapore as there are universities in the UK” said Ms Adeline Seah, Business Manager of Edupoll. “The presence of such a large number of foreign universities will enhance Singapore’s image as a key market for transnational higher education,” she added.

While most of these foreign universities tie-up with local universities, polytechnics and private education institutions to offer degree programmes in Singapore, quite a number of them have set up their own campuses in Singapore. Such institutions include University of Chicago, INSEAD, James Cook University, DigiPen Institute of Technology, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, S.P.Jain Center of Management and Curtin University of Technology. Foreign universities represented in Singapore come mainly from USA, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, China, India, Germany, France, Switzerland, Netherlands and Finland.

Some foreign universities have partnered with the local polytechnics to offer degree programmes. For example, New Zealand’s Massey University partners Singapore Polytechnic to offer a Bachelor in Food Technology degree and Chapman University of United States works with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Creative Producing.

A full list of these recognised universities can be found in the inaugural Edupoll’s Guide to Recognised Universities. The guide is the first of its kind in Singapore and can be accessed online 24 x 7 at: www.edupoll.org . To be included in the guide, a university must be recognised by their local government and where appropriate be accredited by a recognised local or international accreditation agency. A full list of our references is published on our website. The guide will help students avoid dubious degrees from unaccredited universities.
