To Edupoll Advisor,

Hi , do you run GAT for Primary 6 students in Singapore ?

Lynn Tan

Dear Lynn,

The General Ability Test is an academic test administered by the secondary schools during the Direct School Admission exercise in Singapore. Each school sets its own test. The purpose of the GAT is for the independent schools to screen eligible students for Direct School Admission before the PSLE examination. Successful students are offered places in top secondary schools if they passed the GAT and other related assessments and interviews. Top secondary schools like Raffles Institution , Raffles Girls School and Anglo-Chinese School Independent conduct GATs every year during the annual DSA exercise.

ACSI exempt GEP students from taking the GAT.
RI requires an average 80% grade average from GEP applicants, otherwise have to take the GAT as well.

Must try for Direct School Admission (DSA) at all costs - for example, most top RI and RGS students were admitted via DSA before PSLE.

In Singapore, competition to get into top secondary schools is getting keener as more parents recognised the value of studying in a good school : good environment, networking with the cream of each cohort, exposure, access to opportunities provided by integrated programme schools and more.

There are some information on this at www.edupoll.org

BTW, the top 4 secondary schools in Singapore are : Raffles Institution, Raffles Girls Secondary School, Hwa Chong Institution and Nanyang Girls High School. These schools offer high-standard and holistic education pitched at GEP level.

Another top school is NUS High School which caters to bright students who are talented in science and mathematics.

GEP kids who score an average of 80% in their Primary 5 and Primary 6 exams are exempted from GAT by Raffles Institution and Raffles Girls' Secondary School. So encourage your kids to work hard and be consistent in their performance ( cannot be like the S&P index )

For the past few years, Nanyang Girls' High School has the highest PSLE cut-off points (COP) in Singapore, beating RI and RGS.

For the 2012 Secondary One cohort :-

Nanyang Girls' COP is 262.

RI and RGS COP is 261

Hwa Chong COP is 259

NJC COP is 258

MGS COP is 250

SCGS COP is 248

Victoria School COP are 247 for Express and 255 for IP

SJI COP is 242

River Valley High COP is 254

As for Nanyang Girls beating RGS COP , one possible reason is that RGS campus is very old whereas Nanyang Girls' High has a big new campus and a big boarding complex. Also you cannot discount the China factor and influence on our society's elite. Hence the greater demand for the white uniforms.

I'm from Nanyang Girls' High School. In recent years, Nanyang has been gaining popularity among parents and students. The reason why many of my classmates chose to come to our school is not only because of our spacious campus, but because of Nanyang's success in educating generations of girls. The people from Nanyang are very friendly and the programmes here make learning very fun. Many of my friends can't wait to go back to school after the holidays. If you ask any Nanyang girl, they will tell you that Nanyang rocks! This is how enjoyable school life is in Nanyang!
